Improved Accuracy, Precision and Laboratory Productivity from Employing a Single Tube SPE-GCB Sample Preparation Configuration for the Analysis of PFAS under DOD QSM 5.3

ABSTRACT

Performing PFAS analyses under the guidelines of DOD QSM 5.3 requires the use of both SPE-WAX and SPE-GCB treatment in sample preparation. These two concentration/purification steps have traditionally been performed been performed sequentially in separate extraction tubes or with a single SPE tube followed by a subsequent dSPE-GCB treatment. However, by combining the WAX and GCB sorbents in a single tube, the two procedures can be performed simultaneously while still remaining within DOD QSM5.3 guidelines. Because the number of sample transfers is reduced, using this stacked tube configuration can result in improved data accuracy and precision. An additional benefit is a corresponding increase in sample throughput which is beneficial for production laboratories. Based upon the operating experience of a major commercial environmental testing laboratory, data will be presented to which show the improved recovery of specific PFAS analytes prepared with the single tube method compared to separate SPE-WAX treatment followed by dSPE- GCB treatment. Also presented, will be typical analyte recovery data for Laboratory Control Samples from routine sample analysis batches which demonstrate DOD QSM 5.3 compliance.
