ABSTRACT
California environmental laboratory certification has come under attack as incompetent. Reports of unprepared, inefficient, and even napping auditors have been made public however the issues run deeper than just incompetency. What is more startling is that many of the underlying issues are seen in other programs although not at the level they are in California. The presenter will draw on over 40 years’ experience as both auditor and audited including his experiences as to what happened in the early years of California ELAP. These issues are not new to the laboratory certification process and are actually as old as the process itself.
