ABSTRACT

LIMS support daily laboratory operations and workflow in a variety of ways, including improving analysis efficiency, increasing information availability, sample tracking, ensuring consistent use of chemicals and products and directing internal workflow. LIMS can also play a role in two other key areas: business resilience planning and enterprise risk management. Business resilience planning increases a laboratory’s capacity to seize opportunities created by unexpected events, while enterprise risk management involves tactical planning for natural and human made disasters, beginning with disaster preparedness, and moving on to disaster response and recovery. These activities require a clear understanding of information accessibility and data security, human resources and capacity, laboratory equipment infrastructure vulnerabilities and assets, supply chain and vendor management. This presentation will discuss how LIMS can be used to support both business resilience planning and enterprise risk management using examples from research, biomedical and environmental laboratories.
