ABSTRACT

The analysis of organic semivolatiles compounds (SVOC) by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) is challenging due to the diverse array of analytes and their corresponding chemical nature. Consequently, the need for flexibility in the calibrated concentration range and number of analytes is of great importance. Avoiding unplanned downtime and reestablishing system suitability are paramount in ensuring laboratory productive and meeting customer requested turnaround times. Data analysis and reporting are perhaps the most demanding aspect of SVOC analysis, as there are abundant quality control criteria specified by the recently revised US EPA Method 8270E.

EPA Method 8270E performance using an Agilent 8890 GC with a 5977 MS with an EI source to establish a wide linear dynamic range will be demonstrated. Strategies for avoiding unplanned downtime using the Agilent 8890 GC’s onboard intelligence, maintenance counters, and smart consumables will be illustrated. Furthermore, the use of Agilent’s Retention Time Locking (RTL) feature to prevent retention time shifts after capillary column maintenance will be described. Finally, techniques for facilitating data analysis and reporting using Agilent MassHunter software will be detailed.
