ABSTRACT
The GERSTEL Twister is a PDMS coated stir bar used mostly for trace analysis of analytes in aqueous samples. The stir bar is placed in a sample and stirred. While stirring, analytes partition and concentrate into the PDMS phase. The stir bar is removed from the sample, dried, and analyzed by thermal desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry. This talk will describe the principles behind Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) and show data from a recent round robin study using SBSE as a substitute for liquid/liquid extraction for the analysis of semivolatile compounds by EPA Method 625.1.
