ABSTRACT
Thermal desorption is the near perfect match for the sampling and preconcentration of volatiles and semi-volatile components in air and soil gas. Few techniques can challenge thermal desorption's unique position of ultra low system backgrounds coupled with the ability to sample from mL to over 30 liter (L) sample volumes achieving extremely low levels of detection to protect human health.
This talk will cover the theory of operation in a focused approach to support the practical aspects of instrument day to day operations. Both pumped and active sampling will be covered.
This presentation is an educational short course on thermal desorption covering, as follows:
• Theory and function;
• Adsorbent tubes used in the sampling of toxic volatile and semi-volatile compounds;
• Air applications such as soil gas, soil vapor intrusion, fenceline monitoring, and super fund sites;
• Selecting adsorbents for new and emerging contaminants;
• Troubleshooting and maintenance;
• How to best isolate components for investigation if required.
