ABSTRACT
The analysis of PAHs and alkyl substituted PAHs at sub ug/l concentrations is a challenging but more thorough approach to the assessment of petroleum contamination and exposure. By including the analysis of saturated hydrocarbons (alkanes) and biomarkers additional information is provided that can be useful in the determination of sample weathering, sample source and extent of biodegradation on the sample. The analytical challenges associated with this type of analysis, it's use as a forensic tool and the use of additional quality assurance practices to enhance data reliability will also be discussed.
