ABSTRACT

Laboratories reporting NPDES compliance sample results to Kentucky’s Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (KPDES) have had difficulty understanding permit language that includes “most sensitive method” statement. The questions that arise are what is “most sensitive” and what is “sensitive enough”. This most often occurs with metals (total and recoverable) and other contaminants with low Kentucky KPDES reporting limit requirements. Kentucky has established a Demonstration of Capability (DOC) that allows for a technical review of the laboratory’s capability in achieving the required reporting limits. The DOC includes an Initial and Ongoing Demonstration of Capability; Method Detection Limit Study; and Reporting Limit Standard verification at the required reporting limit.
