ABSTRACT

In recent years, as unconventional natural gas development has grown at an exponential rate, the Marcellus has proven to be a difference-maker. However, the general public and the regulatory communities have not been prepared for the fast-paced nature of the industry. The public, and by extension the media, has been on a very steep learning curve as they have struggled to understand the technical aspects of the industry and how drilling operations interface with the environment. Further, the regulatory community has been in flux as they have worked to establish meaningful and relevant regulations. In addition, the industry itself has continued to evolve and make adjustments to best management practices. As the industry and stakeholders move forward, education and science will continue to play a very critical role in the successful development of oil and gas. However, there are challenges to overcome and variables to consider. This presentation will elaborate on regulatory issues in the Marcellus and the role of proper field evaluation, monitoring, and science.
