ABSTRACT
The mission of the Railroad Commission of Texas is to serve Texas by our stewardship of natural resources and the environment, our concern for personal and community safety, and our support of enhanced development and economic vitality for the benefit of Texans. As technology has dramatically changed over the past decade to extract oil and gas in the tight shale plays, the Railroad Commission has improved its regulations concerning the new processes taking place in the field to enhance our stewardship of natural resources and the environment. These new regulations encompass everything from the drilling, well control, completion, and hydraulic fracturing of a well to the recycling and handling of drilling and completion wastewater and solids. These new regulations help to ensure the protection of our surface water and groundwater resources while allowing operators the flexibility of utilizing new strategies and technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce the potential for pollution.
